The Joyride Back Home

Song of the Day: "Joyride" – Roxette

The moment I walked through the door, my faithful companion was there—tail wagging, eyes bright, and body vibrating like he’d been running on pure joy for days. He didn’t just greet me; he shadowed me. Every step I took, he took. Every room I entered, he entered. When I finally sat down, he collapsed across me, a warm, furry anchor holding me in place, making sure I didn’t slip away again.

It reminded me of something important: there are beings—human, animal, and even the odd little voices in our heads—that care deeply about whether we keep showing up. After being gone for far too long—not just from home, but from my own goals—I’m back.

Of course, my inner chaos duo wasted no time in showing up too.

The second I laced my sneakers, Tobito—the manic personal trainer in my brain—was on me.
“A-ha! The Joyride begins! We’re making up for lost time—25 burpees, a 5k sprint, THEN a hundred push-ups! Move! Move! Move!”

Before I could argue, the Refried Avenger barged in, the embodiment of well-meaning disaster.
“Hold up, Speed Racer! The human just got back—we need to be gentle. Recovery is key! I’ve made you a nutrient-rich smoothie!”

It sounded promising… until I realized he’d blended protein powder with leftover chili. He handed it to me proudly.
“It’s fusion cuisine. High protein. High flavor. The ultimate comeback fuel!”

Tobito snorted. “Pssh. Real commitment doesn’t taste like chili. Rest days are for the weak! We start a five-hour, high-intensity session tomorrow at 5 a.m.!”

The Refried Avenger, now trying to clean up the chili-smoothie spill with a single paper towel, shook his head. “Don’t listen to him. I’ll have another one ready tomorrow—with more beans!

By the time I flopped onto the couch, my dog had claimed his post beside me. Tobito was muttering about “joyride acceleration plans,” and the Refried Avenger was apologizing with a mop in one hand and a bag of tortilla chips in the other.

And somehow, I realized—that’s the joyride. It’s not smooth highways and scenic overlooks. It’s potholes, wrong turns, ridiculous snacks, and the constant push-pull between drive and compassion. It’s showing up. It’s the wagging tails, the sore muscles, and the laughter you didn’t see coming.

Here’s to the joyride—messy, loud, and completely worth it. Because the real ride isn’t about the miles—it’s about the company you keep along the way.
