The Ballroom Blitz Energy

Song of the Day: Ballroom Blitz

The first chords of Ballroom Blitz by Tia Carrere hit, and I knew this wasn’t going to be a perfect training montage. No epic lighting, no slow-motion hair flips, and definitely no personal chef serving protein pancakes. Just pure, unfiltered chaos with a rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack. My fitness journey is less a graceful waltz and more a glorious, slightly unhinged blitz.

This morning, I wasn’t awakened by motivation whispering in my ear. No, I was startled into consciousness by my dog, Chester, planting himself squarely on my chest. His tail wagged at a speed normally reserved for hummingbird wings.

Tobito, my ever-jealous imaginary sidekick, gasped dramatically. “Oh, sooo he gets to be your alarm clock now? I’ve been rehearsing my interpretive dance wake-up calls for weeks, and this guy just steps on your lungs and wins?!”

I tried to remind Tobito that Chester was, in fact, a real creature, but he was already stomping away like a caffeinated marching band drummer. That’s when the Refried Avenger—my coffee-fueled, voice-of-reason alter ego—slid into the room, sipping from a mug roughly the size of his head.

“Tobito,” he said slowly, “maybe—and I’m spitballing here—you don’t need to compete with a dog. Maybe save your energy for the workout?”

Wrong thing to say. Tobito interpreted “save” as “spend immediately” and launched into a breakdance routine in the kitchen. By the time the song hit “Are you ready, Steve?”, Tobito was already on lap number five around me as I attempted squats.

The Avenger tried to intervene, using the tone you’d use on a toddler wielding a stick of butter. “Okay, let’s keep the blender upright this time!” But Tobito wasn’t listening. He started adding “helpful” commentary every time I moved. “Nice squat form… oh wait, here comes the Tobito tornado!”

The more chaotic it got, the more I had to adjust—dodging Tobito, avoiding Chester’s wagging tail, and ignoring the Avenger’s muttered workout scorekeeping. My heart rate skyrocketed, my legs burned, and yet… I was laughing too much to care.

And somewhere in the madness, I realized this is exactly what Ballroom Blitz is about—wild, unpredictable, full of energy you didn’t expect. Progress doesn’t always happen in neat, focused silence. Sometimes it’s in the chaos—the blitz moments—when you have no choice but to adapt and push harder.

By the time the final chorus rang out, Tobito had collapsed on the floor in mock exhaustion, Chester had claimed the couch, and the Avenger was shaking his head like he couldn’t believe he signed up for this circus.

But he smiled.
And I smiled.
Because weight loss and self-improvement aren’t about perfection—they’re about showing up, even if the workout looks more like a music video blooper reel.

Today’s workout wasn’t flawless. But it was loud, sweaty, unpredictable, and mine. And I think Tobito would agree… even chaos burns calories.
