"The Holiday Season:Embracing Singleness with Gratitude"

Entry #39

As the holiday season arrives, I'm filled with excitement to reconnect with friends and family at parties and gatherings. At my stage in life, these events become even more precious, as I only see some loved ones two to three times a year. We catch up on work, sports, family, and our favorite drinks. However, there's one aspect of holiday parties that I've grown to dread: the inevitable question from that one person – "Why are you still single?"

This uncomfortable inquiry started about a decade ago, when everyone around me was building their families. I was dating someone at the time, and we'd attend events together, including her birthday party in October. But December brought heartbreak, and the questioning began.

The most awkward experience was four years ago, when we'd all planned a holiday dinner and New Year's Eve celebration. My girlfriend at the time was thrilled, and we'd even paid for our tickets. But on December 20th, just three days before the dinner and eleven days before New Year's, she broke up with me. I was left scrambling to find someone to take my tickets, and thankfully, a friend's plans fell through. The embarrassment still lingers.

This year, I'm looking forward to a different dynamic. With new partners and children attending, the attention will shift away from my singleness. I've also preemptively shared my story with our host, hoping to avoid another awkward conversation.

While it's natural to feel frustrated about people prying into my personal life, I've come to realize that their curiosity stems from care. It's a reminder that I'm not alone, and that others are invested in my well-being. As I continue on my journey of self-growth, I'm learning to navigate these situations with empathy and understanding.

This holiday season, I choose gratitude. I'm thankful for the people who care, the parties, the football, and the memories we create together. Being single isn't their fault; it's a chapter in my life that I'm still writing. With a positive mindset and a heart full of appreciation, I'm ready to embrace the festive spirit and cherish the time with loved ones.
